Changing conceptions of cognitive behavior modification: retrospect and prospect.
A retrospective analysis of cognitive behavior modification reveals that 3 major metaphors have been offered to explain the role that cognitions play in behavior change. These metaphors include cognition as a form of conditioning, information processing, and, currently, narrative construction. The implications of using each of these metaphors are discussed.
متن کاملProspect Relativity 1 Running Head: PROSPECT RELATIVITY Prospect Relativity: How Choice Options Influence Decision Under Risk
In many theories of decision under risk (e.g., expected utility theory, rank dependent utility theory, and prospect theory) the utility or value of a prospect is independent of other prospects or options in the choice set. The experiments presented here show a large effect of the available options set, suggesting instead that prospects are valued relative to one another. The judged certainty eq...
متن کاملReward modulates spatial neglect
BACKGROUND Reward has been shown to affect attention in healthy individuals, but there have been no studies addressing whether reward influences attentional impairments in patients with focal brain damage. METHODS Using two novel variants of a widely-used clinical cancellation task, we assessed whether reward modulated impaired attention in 10 individuals with left neglect secondary to right ...
متن کاملReward-prospect interacts with trial-by-trial preparation for potential distraction.
When attending for impending visual stimuli, cognitive systems prepare to identify relevant information while ignoring irrelevant, potentially distracting input. Recent work (Marini et al., 2013) showed that a supramodal distracter-filtering mechanism is invoked in blocked designs involving expectation of possible distracter stimuli, although this entails a cost (distraction-filtering cost) on ...
متن کاملUtilization of reward-prospect enhances preparatory attention and reduces stimulus conflict.
The prospect of gaining money is an incentive widely at play in the real world. Such monetary motivation might have particularly strong influence when the cognitive system is challenged, such as when needing to process conflicting stimulus inputs. Here, we employed manipulations of reward-prospect and attentional-preparation levels in a cued-Stroop stimulus conflict task, along with the high te...
